WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Monday is here and another week begins. Most consider Monday’s terrible and dread them like the plague, but I personally love them. We can now get down to business and start making some money!
Markets are down. Volatility is up.
This pretty much sums up what you need to know before the open. U.S. stock futures are in negative territory at the moment and nearly all European, German and Asian markets are declining.
One thing that is up is the CBOE Volatility Index [stock_quote symbol=vix]. Thank God! I really needed it to rise and I’ve been waiting patiently for over a week. Currently it is up 9% and holding with a high of 14.53 up from Friday’s close of 13.22. Remember, the VIX is now disseminated starting at 2:15 AM.
The Saudi’s are stirring up trouble announcing Monday they would be expanding their oil output by 750,000 to 1 million barrels per day by expanding their oil fields. This along with continued concerns over the supply glut have oil prices currently dipping over 1% (1.65% as of 4:30 AM) to trade at $43.03 per barrel.
There are over 1000 companies reporting earnings this week (up from 400 last week) which should drive volatility higher. Most notable today before the market open is Philips [stock_quote symbol=phg] and Xerox [stock_quote symbol=xrx]. Express Scripts [stock_quote symbol=esrx] and First Bancorp [stock_quote symbol=fbnc] are the main companies reporting after the closing bell. Earnings have been mixed so far and we could see even greater volatility if a majority issue poor reports. Here’s to that!
Federal Reserve policy makers meet this week (26th and 27th). Most believe they will keep interest rates on hold due to continued concerns over the state of the economy. This will be a busy economic data week with U.S. GDP figures for the first quarter being released Thursday as well as new home sales for March.
